Face Down it to save your iPhone's battery life.

Save Your iPhone's Battery Life by Place Face Down. iOS 9 brings useful new features that you might not have noticed. Known as "face advance detection", your iPhone can detect when placed face down and will not activate the screen when notification arrives. This will save more battery power if you receive notifications regularly.

How to Detect Facedown Works
While the technology involved is a bit more complex, the tips are simple. When you put your iPhone facing the table, the screen will automatically turn on every time you receive a new notification on your lock screen. You can glance at your cellphone to read notifications without touching it.

If you don't plan to see your iPhone notification when it arrives, just place your screen face down. You will still hear the notification sound and your mobile still vibrates. However, when the notification arrives, the screen will still be turned off. This saves battery power.

Before iOS 9, your iPhone screen was completely lit every time you received a notification even when it was facing down. There is no advantage in putting your iPhone face down besides not seeing notifications. The screen will continue to light, using the same battery power as if you put the iPhone facing up.

Which iPhone works with this?
Like many iOS features, face detection does not work on every iPhone. This special feature works on iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus.

This doesn't work on iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 4s, and other old iPhones. It also doesn't work on iPad or iPod Touch devices.

Face detection requires certain hardware because it uses motion coprocessor, which is also used for tracking the steps of your iPhone. In fact, it only works if the feature is active. If you go to Settings> Privacy> Motion and Fitness and deactivate the "Fitness Tracking" feature, face down detection will stop functioning and your iPhone will turn on the display every time it receives a notification, even if it faces down on the surface.

This feature is introduced in conjunction with the Low Power Mode on iOS 9. Like the Low Power Mode, it is designed to help save battery power. But it will only save battery power if you know about this tip and choose to set your iPhone face down instead of facing up when you don't need to see the screen.
